Fish Veterinarian in Callaway, MD

koi fish swimming in the pond

At All Kinds Veterinary Hospital, we extend our care to aquatic companions like koi and other pet fish. While fish are often considered low-maintenance pets, their health and well-being depend on proper care, a clean habitat, and attention to their behavior. By far the most common fish species we care for is koi. These fish are popular for their vibrant beauty, long lifespans (up to 30 years), and role in enhancing garden ponds. Because koi often live in groups, illnesses can quickly spread, making early detection and treatment essential.

Signs of Illness in Fish

Fish, like any pet, can develop health problems, including fungal and viral infections, parasite infestations, and injuries. Be alert for the following behaviors, which may indicate illness:

Coughing: Rapid opening and closing of the gill covers
Flashing: Rubbing against surfaces or objects
Piping: Gulping air at the surface of the water
Circling: Repeated swimming in circles
Drifting: Floating without direction
Abnormal Posture: Tilting or assuming an unusual position in the water

If you notice any of these behaviors, it’s important to act quickly to prevent further health decline or the spread of illness to other fish.

In-Habitat Examinations

Whenever possible, we prefer to examine fish within their own environment, such as their pond or aquarium. Observing fish in their habitat provides vital insights into their health and the conditions affecting their well-being. Dr. Adam Terry assesses:

  • Behavior by noting any unusual actions or changes
  • Habitat size by ensuring adequate space for the fish population
  • Water quality by evaluating pH levels, temperature, and filtration systems
  • Diet by providing information on proper nutrition to promote growth and immunity
  • Physical condition by identifying color changes, lesions, growths, or musculoskeletal issues

We provide house calls for fish within a 75-mile radius of our Callaway, MD animal hospital.

Advanced Fish Veterinary Care

When needed, we can provide specialized treatments, including:

  • Surgical Removal of Growths: We perform surgery with water-dissolving anesthetics to keep your fish calm and comfortable.
  • Diagnosis and Treatment of Infections: We identify and treat fungal, viral, and parasitic conditions.

Our goal is to keep your fish healthy and their environment in optimal condition to support a long and vibrant life.

How to Transport Your Fish

If you need to bring your fish to our hospital, transport them in a tightly sealed container filled with water from their regular habitat. This minimizes stress and ensures they remain as comfortable as possible.
